Keeping in mind the things that happened in the past, with the thought of a new business and finding a new market at a different place, Istavro Sabuncakis gave his son,
ISTIRATI SABUNCAKIS 500 Ottoman gold coins and sent him to a relative in Istanbul, in
1870. The year 1870, when Istirati Sabuncakis came to Istanbul or rather Pera, was the beginning of a term of changes for Pera. On June 5, 1870 a big fire destroyed the area to a great extend. 3000 buildings burned down. After this fire a new construction begun under these conditions Istirati Sabuncakis came to Pera and started to look for new business opportunities. At that time Pera, being under the influence of the newly established 6th town hall and the Levantines living in this district, was trying to adopt anything from the Western civilisation. Shops have been opened, where any goods could be purchased and also goods exported from Europe have been marketed. Istirati Sabuncakis recognised that, although there have been establishments on any subject and area, there was no one selling
"natural flowers". There have been only two companies in Pera, who where producing and selling natural flowers,
Doulat and his partner' s shop and Hiristo Topus' shop.
Istirati Sabuncakis, who followed the work of these florists, first started to work at one of these shops, in order to learn the technique of growing flowers and selling them. At 1874, using his capital, he opened the first shop in
"Hamalbasi Serkis Sokagi", today's Eczacibasi Sokagi No:12. Though, opening the shop was not enough. He had to grow the plants and flowers to be marketed, on his own. For this reason he bought land at Tatavla (that was totally empty land at that time) and constructed his gardens and greenhouses.
Istirati Sabuncakis' father Istavro Sabuncakis was proud of his son's attempts and without neglecting his business in Lesbos, he came to Istanbul, in
1890. Meanwhile, Istirati Sabuncakis had developed his business and opened a big branch in
Avrupa Pasaji No: 3-5. Istirati Sabuncakis got eleven children and two of them,
Yorgi and Konstantin Sabuncakis, developed the floristry business.
Before 1900, they bought the shop at No:
"366" today's 304, on Pera and to increase the size of the shop they hired the shops at the entrance of
Lorenzo Cikmazi and they became the company with the biggest business and greenhouses in Istanbul. In
1900, Istirati Sabuncakis wrote a book about informations and techniques of growing flowers and plants, and at the same time he published a magazine on floristry. The pilar of the family, Istavro Sabuncakis, died in
1908.
In 1923, after the declaration of the
republic, in 1932, the Sabuncakis Company, now famous with all the work that they have done by that time, got the contract for growing plants at the
Ankara Çubuk Dam. All this work had been appreciated and with the will of Ataturk, a branch,
Sehir Cicek Evi, at Ankara Bankalar Caddesi No: 17, in the name of Sabuncakis ve Ort. Koll.
Sti. (Sabuncakis and Partners Coll.Co.) got opened. Yorgi Sabuncakis got four children, Istavro, Istirati, Virginia and Maria.
Istavro and Istirati Sabuncakis inclined towards floristry.
In 1961, the grandchild, Istirati Sabuncakis established
Istirati Sabuncakis ve Ortagi Koll. Sti. at Kadiköy Muhurdar Caddesi No:23 &
25.
Later, in 1966, they opened a branch in
Bakirkoy, in 1970, the companies named Sabu Çiçekçilik Tic. ve San A.S. and
Sabas Çiçekçilik Tic A.S. have been established.
In 1973, the Yesilyurt branch,
in 1974 Caddebostan and in 1981 the Göztepe branch got opened.
In 1976 the grandson Istirati Sabuncakis founded the
"Interflora Association".
Konstantin Sabuncakis died in
1977, his brother Yorgi died two month later in Istanbul. Yorgi
Sabuncakis' son, Istavro, the brother of Istirati Sabuncakis, died in
1981.
In 1988, Istirati Sabuncakis established
Ritmo Tarim Urunleri Tic. ve San. A.S., in the area of Antalya - Alanya -
Alara.
All the companies that have been established and shared by the
Sabuncakis family, are still active in Ankara, Istanbul and Antalya.
